ǁ - Translingual

Alternative forms

Symbol

ǁ

  1. (IPA) the forward release of a lateral click.
    • (superscript) [ǁ]-coloring such as the lateral release of a click (e.g. [𝼊𐞷], retroflex click with lateral click release); or a weak, fleeting or epenthetic [ǁ]-release.
  2. the tenuis velar or sometimes uvular lateral click, [kǁ] or [qǁ]

Usage notes

Technically, ǁ is only the forward clicked release, not the entire consonant. It is adequate for click sounds without a rear release, such as the tchick! tchick! command to prompt a horse in English. A full transcription of a click consonant requires a second letter to specify whether the rear closure is velar or uvular, and whether the click is voiced or nasal:

  • VelarUvular
    Voiceless k͜ǁq͜ǁ
    Voiced ɡ͜ǁɢ͜ǁ
    Nasal ŋ͜ǁɴ͜ǁ

The tie bar may be omitted, and the accompanying letter may be superscripted.

If the order is reversed, e.g. ǁ͜q, that may imply that the velar or uvular release is audible (delayed release).
